Yeah yeah, I know, for whatever reason the press is making a big hub-bub about that lunchtime classic, the sandwich. The SANDWICH people, c'mon?! Somehow it's once again become "fashionable" in the culinary world, go figure? But since I was five, when my dad brought home subs from Le Grand Appetit in Great Falls after many a long hot day slogging in the yard, I've sought after pastramification perfection, and this time I may have found it.
To that end, my coworker Anthony and I decided to celebrate a gloriously sunny day by sneaking out of work and racing from Redmond to Pioneer Square (I almost got a ticket) for the porchetta @ Salumi. Esquire magazine voted it one of the best sandwiches in America, and for good reason: it's unbelievable! Heaps of heavenly seasoned pulled pork, meticulously prepared onions and peppers, some sort of garlicky sauciness, all on a fresh baguette. While I really only needed half, I succumbed to larger gastro-intestinal forces and downed the whole thing. Between that culinary monstrosity and a recent lack of quality sleep, I need a nap so bad...and some nitroglycerin pills...and this lamp....this lamp and this ashtray and these pills, and that's all I need.
Next stop, Kevin Davis' Po' Boy @ Steelhead Diner.
I went to high school in Northern Virginia, Langley High School to be exact, from '86-90. At the time it was no big deal to go to school with Congressmen's kids, Supreme Court Justice's kids, even the Vice President's kid (Dan Quayle's son for a short spat). In hindsight it was kinda cool, especially given the sheer amount of bullshit that's rolled out of DC this decade. Sure would have been fun if the haps of the last 8 years took place while we were all in high school together. Just imagine the fun!
There was one girl who I never put "2 & 2 together" with in terms of political connections until my old buddy Josh tee'd it up over drinks last winter. Her name was Danielle DeLay. She was more a "what" than a "who": outgoing, cheerleader, pretentious. Yeah, kinda hot and full of herself. Can't say I blame her given the circumstances.
I never said more than two words to Danielle. She a cheerleader, me a nerd, so be it. But man, I sure love what happened to both her and her pappa. He became one of the top 10 Congressional criminals in all of American political history, ultimately forced to resign. She was indicted for taking rather exorbitant "consulting fees" from her dad (if anyone knows where that case ended up, I'd love to know).
Why do I bring this up? Well I happened to be going through old bookmarks and remembered this little gem from political activist, Max Blumenthal. He attends a Hitler Youth Young Republican meeting a few years ago where the keynote speaker is none other than Danielle DeLay's pappy, Tom. I don't know how Mr. Blumenthal completed this visit with a straight face, but you won't see me playing Texas Hold'em with him anytime soon.
This is just hilarious, yet typical. Love the highlight quotes from Max from Christian High School, especially: "I've prayed about it to God and I know for a fact that I am NOT gay." Whatever bro. Keep tapping that foot in the men's room stall "for no particular reason".
Always game for a social experiment to break up the status quo, this one sure looked fun...
I'm sick at home with the flu, so Katie decided to rent me a few movies, among them the "King of Kong". I'm not a video game junkie, but I do love playing Mario Galaxy, that's for sure...
Anyways, we sat down to watch this flick, and I have to say it was a really great movie. It's hard not to feel for Steve Wiebe, the local hero from Redmond, and how a bunch of wanksters saw it fit to overrule his high score with a cruddy video tape from Billy Mitchell, now the self proclaimed "King of DONG". Anyways, if you get a chance, drop it in your NetFlix queue. Really good movie.
Last year I bought an Xtracycle attachment for my Jamis Dakota front supension bike. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. (Are there bad "bike decisions"? I think not.)
I built "her" up in the spring, and throughout the summer Katie and I rode down to the Ballard Sunday farmer's market. We'd load it up with veggies and GIANT bouquets of flowers (Katie has to have her flowers). Then it was off to Safeway for the week's groceries (all in the same load). Not the fastest rig in my shed, that's sure, but without a doubt the most fun. The naturally high positioning of the Xtracycle is pushed even higher with the Schwalbe Big Apple tires and 5" travel fork.
During the winter months I perused the bike sales for some Xtracycle WideLoaders. I found an amazing deal online, so of course I had to buy 'em and throw 'em on. Mind you the weather's been either super cold or super rainy here in Seattle, but I did wheel her out of the garage to snap off a few pics today of the newly installed WideLoaders:
Next up for my baby: a homebuilt rack to tote my 12 foot stand-up paddlesurf board. Just need some copper pipe and a blow torch. You think I'm kidding. :)
As I do every morning, I distilled down my work email to what interested me most, in this case the semi-weekly Ticketmaster-gram. Not a fan of Ticketmaster, mind you, but always interested in who's gonna drop in on our very wet and dreary town. Saw that Hot Chip is going to be playing the Showbox on 04.22.08, which can only mean one thing: NEW ALBUM! Yahoo! Looks like it's coming out at the end of the month. Totally psyched!
